To ensure the effective diagnosis, treatment, and management of Tuberculosis (TB), the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) TB Control and Prevention Program collaborates with clinicians and county health departments throughout Florida. These partners work together to guarantee that individuals needing TB screening and/or evaluation receive all necessary services and that patients with latent TB infections or active TB disease receive adequate, complete treatment.

Reporting

The reporting of active Tuberculosis (TB) cases is required by law under Florida Statutes Chapter 381 Public Health: General Provisions and Chapter 392 Tuberculosis Control.

A person has active TB when either of the following occurs:

  • A culture specimen taken from any source has tested positive for mycobacteria tuberculosis and the person has not completed an appropriate prescribed course of medications for tuberculosis disease, or
  • There is current radiologic, clinical, or laboratory evidence sufficient to establish a medical diagnosis of tuberculosis for which treatment is indicated and the person has not completed an appropriate prescribed course of medication for tuberculosis.

The DOH-Miami-Dade is responsible for every case of TB in Maimi-Dade County, including patients who are treated by private providers. Therefore, DOH-Miami-Dade must be notified by health care providers of all cases of TB and report next business day.
