The Florida Department of Health in Miami Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) will provide you with knowledge and a rewarding experience in a state government organization addressing public health needs in coordination with Federal, State and County programs. The mission of the Volunteer Services Program is to promote access to quality health care for the medically underserved and uninsured residents of Florida through the commitment of volunteers. The Volunteer Health Services Program accomplishes its role through two volunteer programs authorized by Chapters 110 and 766, Florida Statutes.

Chapter 110 Volunteer Program

The Chapter 110 Volunteer Program is an internal state agency program, which provides opportunities for anyone who wants to donate goods and/or their services to those in need under the supervision of the Department of Health. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available in many DOH facilities to individuals with clerical, administrative, technical and professional skills. You must be 18 years prior to the start of volunteer duties.

Application Process

After you find an area of interest, you must complete the Volunteer Application Form and 2 Personal Reference Questionnaires.

Submit the completed application and questionnaires to MiamiDade@FLHealth.gov Once placement is confirmed, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule your background screening to secure your placement at DOH-Miami Dade County. You must pass background screening and complete mandatory training modules to volunteer with DOH-Miami Dade.

Volunteer Health Care Provider Program, s. 766.1115, F.S.

The Volunteer Health Care Provider Program, s. 766.1115, F.S., allows private licensed health care providers to volunteer their services to the medically indigent residents of Florida with incomes at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level and be under the state’s sovereign immunity. Through a contract, a provider can be designated an “agent of the state” and have sovereign immunity for uncompensated services rendered to clients determined eligible and referred by DOH.

Health Support Assistant – Clinical

DOH Program: Preventive Services

Volunteers will:

  • Assist the staff with client/visitor flow in the Health District Center and/or Florida City Health Center by directing clients and visitors to the appropriate areas within the facility.
  • The Volunteer plays an essential role by greeting clients, providing information, answering questions, routing clients as per procedures, and picking up lab results.
  • Volunteers will call clients to remind of appointments and reschedule no shows.
  • Volunteer will assist in clinical and clerical duties for colposcopy and family planning clinic and at other clinic sites as needed.
Tuberculosis Control – Clinical Services

DOH Program: TB

Volunteers will:

  • Assist the staff with client/visitor flow in the TB Clinic by directing clients and visitors to the appropriate areas within the facility.
  • Greet, guide, and help patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Provide supplemental support to the department staff and will work on a variety of projects to enhance the department.
  • Shadow technicians and assist in getting equipment /escort patients before and after a procedure.
  • Observe clinical providers assess and treat patients and will also be attending clinical meetings for cases review.
  • Works with Public Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and other clerical duties as needs. 
  • Assist in the TB Clinic by directing clients to the appropriate areas during their visit.
  • Assist the surveillance unit, collecting data, data entry, running technical reports, also shadow administrative staff serving clients.
Outreach Volunteer – HIV Program

DOH Program: HIV Program

Participating with FDOH staff and assisting outreach education efforts, HIV Home Test kit and condom distribution, registering clients during testing events, and other duties as assigned.

Public Health Volunteer – Environmental Health

DOH Program: EHS

The volunteer will assist with organizing and maintaining Environmental Public Health (EPH) department physical files for conversion to electronic files. The volunteers will also assist in updating policies and procedures and providing support to the EPH management team.

Quality Improvement Assistant

DOH Program: QPE

The Quality Improvement Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Office of Quality and Performance Excellence with planning, evaluating, and creating visuals that promote the efforts of the program. These include, but are not limited to data collection and analysis, outcomes measurement, and project management.
