Miami, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County recognizes National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, March 10. The purpose of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is to highlight the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls and encourage them to take action by knowing their HIV status and understanding their risk. This year’s theme is: The Best Defense is a Good Offense.
In commemoration of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County will collaborate with community partners to educate women and girls about HIV/AIDS and inform them about the risk of other health disparities that women and girls encounter.
As of 2014, approximately 28 percent of people living with HIV in Miami-Dade County were females. DOH-Miami-Dade is focused on surveillance, education, prevention, testing, counseling, care and treatment for HIV/AIDS.
