Miami, Fla. –The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County recognizes National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) on Sunday, February 7, 2016, a national HIV testing and treatment community mobilization initiative.  The theme this year is “I am my Brother/Sister’s Keeper: Fight HIV/AIDS.”

Sunday marks the 16th year for NBHAAD which was founded to bring attention to the growing HIV and AIDS epidemic in African American communities.

The NBHAAD initiative leverages a national platform to educate, bring awareness, and mobilize the African American community. These are the four key focus areas which encourage people to:

  • Get Educated about HIV and AIDS;
  • Get Involved in community prevention efforts;
  • Get Tested to know their status; and
  • Get Treated to receive the continuum of care needed to live with HIV/AIDS.

In Miami-Dade, the proportion of newly reported adult HIV Infection cases in this population decreased from 48 percent in 2005 to 34 percent in 2014.
