The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County
   Recognizes National Public Health Week

MIAMI – National Public Health Week (NPHW) is recognized in Miami-Dade County and across the nation from April 6-12, 2015. This week brings us together across the United States as we observe and recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation.  This year’s theme is: “Healthiest Nation 2030.”

“This national celebration provides us with an opportunity to focus our attention on state, community and individual efforts aimed at raising awareness and taking steps to address the role of public health and prevention in improving the health of our nation,” said Dr. Lillian Rivera, RN, MSN, PhD, Administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County.

Please join us in raising awareness as we observe this year’s daily themes:

  • Monday: Raising the Grade – The U.S. trails other countries in life expectancy and other measures of good health, and this holds true across all ages and socio-economic groups.

  • Tuesday: Starting from Zip – Today, your zip code says too much about your health.  Within the United States, there are unacceptable disparities in health by race and ethnic group, state by state and even county by county.

  • Wednesday: Building Momentum – Influential leaders, companies and organizations are taking important steps in line with creating the healthiest nation.

  • Thursday: Building Broader Connections – In the work to become the healthiest nation, we can’t do it all on our own.  We have to expand our partnerships to everyone that has an impact on our health.

  • Friday: Building on 20 Years of Success – 2015 is APHA’s 20th anniversary for coordinating National Public Health Week, and the accomplishments of the public health community over the last two decades are significant.

Miami-Dade County was ranked number one in Florida counties for health behaviors which includes tobacco use, and shows improvement in length of life and physical environment according to the 6th annual County Health Rankings.

With the support of our community partners and as part of an integrated Florida Department of Health, together we can achieve the goal to be the healthiest nation in one generation.
