THE Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County
RECOGNIZES MARCH 10, 2015 AS
NATIONAL WOMEN AND GIRLS HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY

(MIAMI, March 6, 2015) – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County recognizes March 10, 2015 as National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  The goal of this day is to offer support and hope, reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS, and empower women and girls to embrace the theme, “Share Knowledge. Take Action.”

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is an annual, nationwide observance to raise awareness of the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls.  Families, health organizations, businesses, communities, the government and individuals come together to provide support, encourage discussion and educate women and girls about the importance of getting tested and knowing their status.

“We must raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and the importance that testing and prevention education play in stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS in our community,” said Lillian Rivera, RN, MSN, PhD, Administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County.

To commemorate this day, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County is collaborating with community partners to host a free event entitled "Red Bows and Divas" - Tuesday, March 10, 2015, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at Camillus House Community Hall, located at 1603 NW 7th Avenue in Miami.  This event is organized to educate women and girls about HIV/AIDS and inform them about the risk of other health disparities that women and girls encounter. HIV education will be available. Pre-registration is required. Please contact Micaelle Titus at 305-216-5300.

For more information on HIV/AIDS or to learn more about these community events, please visit our website at www.miamidade.floridahealth.gov and www.testmiami.org  or contact the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, STD/HIV Prevention and Control Program at (305) 643-7420.
