DOH-Miami-Dade Offers Appointments for COVID-19 Vaccines, Vaccine Booster and Pediatric Vaccine

March 03, 2022

Miami, FL – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) is offering appointments for the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is available to individuals 5 years of age and older while the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine is available to individuals 18 years of age and older. DOH-Miami-Dade is also offering free flu vaccine for individuals 18 years of age and older.

Although booster doses are only available for individuals 12 years of age and older, a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is available for individuals 5 years of age and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised. That dose is scheduled 28 days after the second dose.

Individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, are eligible for a booster shot at least 5 months after their initial 2-dose series and individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, are eligible for a booster shot at least 2 months after their 1-dose vaccine.

Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose, when available. Some individuals may have a preference for the vaccine type that they originally received, while others may prefer to get a different booster. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for booster shots of COVID-19 vaccine. Teens 12–17 years old may only get a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster.

As of February 2022, the CDC has only recommended one booster dose. Only people who are moderately to severally immunocompromised are receiving 3 doses of the primary series plus one booster shot 3 months after the last primary dose.
