The Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) is a federally-funded program through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) designed to enhance preparedness in the nation’s major metropolitan statistical areas. Through CRI, state and local public health departments have developed plans to quickly receive and distribute medicine and medical supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile to local communities in response to a large-scale public health emergency. The goal of CRI is to provide prophylaxis to the affected population within 48 hours of the decision to do so.

Miami-Dade County is one of 14 CRI funded counties in Florida. The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) works with the CDC, Regional Domestic Security Task Force, Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management, local law enforcement and fire/rescue agencies, and other community partners to develop, maintain, train and exercise response plans.

Points of Dispensing

In the event of a public health emergency, the Florida Department of Health will establish Points of Dispensing (POD) locations where healthy individuals can receive medications to protect themselves and their families following potential exposure.

During an activation, POD locations and instructions will be communicated through official channels, including local media, the Department’s website, and other outreach methods. This ensures the public is informed about where to go, what to bring, and what to expect.

To ensure timely access to post-exposure prophylaxis for all who need it, DOH-Miami-Dade collaborates with private businesses and community organizations. These partners operate closed PODs, which dispense medications exclusively to their pre-identified employees, members, and household contacts.

Partner organizations receive planning assistance and training from the Department of Health in Miami-Dade. By establishing closed PODs, organizations help reduce demand at public POD sites, resulting in shorter lines and faster service for the entire community.

Your organization can play a vital role in protecting our community during a public health emergency. By becoming a closed POD partner, you will:

  • Ensure your employees and their families receive medications quickly and efficiently
  • Receive free training and planning support from DOH-Miami-Dade
  • Help reduce congestion at public PODs, improving service for everyone
