DOH-Miami-Dade Recognizes National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day – September 18, 2015

Miami, Fla. – In Commemoration of National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAAD), the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County is collaborating with the City of Miami Gardens Councilwoman Lillie Q. Odom and God’s Amazing Grace Outreach Ministries, Inc. to host a FREE community event, “Open the Curtains. Remove the Stigma. Let’s Talk.”  HIV prevention and educational messages as well as health screenings and free rapid HIV testing will be offered.

National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day focuses on the challenging issues facing the aging population including HIV prevention, care and treatment. This year’s theme is "HIV/AIDS Has No Age.” According to the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, in 2014 persons aged 50 and over accounted for 15% of all people living with the HIV virus in Miami-Dade County. Of all new AIDS cases reported in Miami-Dade County in 2014, 31% were among persons aged 50 and over.
