MIAMI — The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County will be celebrating National Nurses Week along with the rest of the nation May 6-12, 2015. This year's theme “Ethical Practice. Quality Care” recognizes the importance of ethics in nursing and acknowledges the strong commitment, compassion and care nurses display in their practice and profession.  This theme is significant to the role our public health nurses play each day in providing ethical, quality care to protect the health of our community.

 

National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as Nurses Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.  The purpose of the week-long celebration is to raise awareness of the value of nursing and help educate the public about the role nurses play in meeting the health care needs of our society.

 

“This week is a time to highlight the importance of the role that our public health nurses play in this community,” said Lillian Rivera, RN, MSN, PhD, Administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County. It is a time to celebrate their numerous accomplishments and efforts to improve our health care system”, added Dr. Rivera.

Annually, National Nurses Week will focus attention on the diverse ways in which America’s 3.1 million registered nurses, the largest healthcare profession, are working to improve health care.
