As October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County is helping educate the South Florida community on breast health.

“This month is not only about awareness; it’s also an opportunity to show support for the women in our lives who are fighting breast cancer,” said Dr. Diaz, administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County.

Breast Cancer is More Common Than You May Think

Female breast cancer is one of the top five most frequently diagnosed cancers in Florida.

However, breast cancer mortality rates are decreasing here in Florida, partially due to improved access to screening.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Screening and early detection are key.

Women should perform a monthly self-breast exam. If there are any changes, they should contact their health care provider.

Find breast health resources available to you. The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County offers free or low-cost breast cancer screenings for those who qualify.

“I encourage women to be proactive and engage their health care provider in discussions about breast health,” Dr. Diaz said.

Know Your Risk

Some risk factors are controllable; some are not.

Uncontrollable factors include:

  • Family history
  • Genetics
  • Previous radiation
  • Breast density

Fortunately, healthy habits can help prevent breast cancer. It is recommended to eat nutritious foods, avoid alcohol and tobacco use, and regularly exercise.

Most importantly, adhere to the recommended screenings.

Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program

Qualifying women can receive free or low-cost breast cancer screenings through the Florida Department of Health’s Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

Early detection can make a meaningful difference, and this program helps make screening accessible in our community.
