Miami Celebrates Breastfeeding with Family Day in Doral

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, along with community partners, hosted a successful breastfeeding awareness event for the community.

The event took place on August 22 at Doral Legacy Park Community Center.

This year was particularly special, marking 15 years of this annual event that recognizes National Breastfeeding Month.

“This event represents 15 years of grassroots dedication by the DOH-Miami-Dade WIC program. What began as a modest, community-driven effort, has now grown into a signature event that brings together families, partners, and advocates from across the county,” said DOH-Miami-Dade WIC Director Eriko Robinson.

National Breastfeeding Month is an annual observance dedicated to protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding through increased awareness and community support. A highlight of the celebration was a latch-a-thon, where mothers came together to celebrate breastfeeding and lean on one another for guidance and support. The event also offered something for the entire family. Children enjoyed face painting and other activities while parents spoke with community partners about the many resources available to support their breastfeeding journeys.

“Our WIC staff have poured their hearts, expertise, and unwavering commitment into building a breastfeeding support network that is deeply rooted in community trust. Families feel seen, supported, and empowered,” Robinson said.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding helps create a powerful bond between mother and child. Studies have shown that breastfeeding can also reduce the risk of certain illnesses for both mom and baby, as well as support postpartum recovery. Although National Breastfeeding Month has come to an end, the support available for breastfeeding mothers continues.

“Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and women do not have to face it alone. We are here to support you through every step of the way” said DOH-Miami-Dade Administrator Dr. Diaz.
