Healthy People 2020

Healthy People 2020 (http://www.healthypeople.gov/) is the blueprint for health in the United States. It has a comprehensive plan for, nationwide health promotion and prevention of illness, disability, and premature death. The two main goals are to increase quality of years of healthy life and eliminate health disparities.

The Florida Department of Health Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention has established goals and objectives to address some of the focus areas for Healthy People 2020.

Arthritis
Goal: Reduce the occurrence, impairment, activity limitation, and restriction in social participation due to arthritis and other rheumatic conditions.

Cancer
Goal: Reduce cancer mortality and morbidity in Florida through prevention, early detection and access to state of the art treatment.

Diabetes
Goals: Reduce the burden of diabetes mellitus and the related health complications among persons in Florida. Reduce health disparities among individuals with diabetes so that quality health care is accessible.

Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention
Goal: Reduce cardiovascular disease and improve quality of life by promoting recommended levels of physical activity; promoting weight management; improving diet and nutrition; eliminating tobacco use; preventing and controlling high blood pressure; preventing and reducing elevated cholesterol; and preventing and controlling diabetes.

Nutrition & Overweight
Goals: Reduce cardiovascular disease and improve quality of life by promoting recommended levels of physical activity; promoting weight management; improving diet and nutrition; eliminating tobacco use preventing and controlling high blood pressure; preventing and reducing elevated cholesterol; and preventing and controlling diabetes. Reduce the prevalence of obesity among Florida's children and adults.

Physical Activity
Goal: Reduce cardiovascular disease and improve quality of life by promoting recommended levels of physical activity; promoting weight management; improving diet and nutrition; eliminating tobacco use; preventing and controlling high blood pressure; preventing and reducing elevated cholesterol; and preventing and controlling diabetes.

Tobacco Use Among Adults
Goal: Reduce the burden of chronic diseases related to tobacco use and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Epilepsy
Goals: To improve the quality of life and productivity of Floridians with epilepsy by providing services to maximize seizure control, education to eliminate the stigma of epilepsy, and awareness to prevent injuries that may lead to epilepsy.
