DOH-Miami-Dade and Partners Celebrate National Breastfeeding Month with 2021 BreastfeedMIAMI and the Art of Breastfeeding

August 19, 2021

Miami, FL — In recognition of National Breastfeeding Month, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County WIC Program and local partners will host 2021 BreastfeedMIAMI. This year's theme— Breastfeeding: Every Step of the Way focuses on the importance of ‘continuity of care’, highlighting breastfeeding as the foundation of lifelong good health for mothers, fathers, and the family unit.

Together, this extraordinary collaborative aims to educate, support, and promote breastfeeding with the goal of supporting the health of babies and children within our community. Breastfeeding is recognized as the normative way to feed infants, and it is well known that infants who are breastfed for 6 months and beyond have significant lifelong health advantages over those who are not.

National Breastfeeding Month’s weekly observances and themes include:

Week 1 – World Breastfeeding Week, Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility

Week 2 – Indigenous Milk Medicine Week, Nourishing Our Futures

Week 3 – Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Week, Reclaiming Our Traditions

Week 4 – Black Breastfeeding Week, The Big Pause: Collective Rest for Collective Power

In honor of August being National Breastfeeding Month, BreastfeedMIAMI 2021 has hosted several events throughout the community: Colors of Breastfeeding, The Virtual Big Latch On and the upcoming first ever, one-of-a-kind, Art of Breastfeeding.
