Denisse Barrera, DNP, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC
Director, Women’s Health and Preventive Services
Denisse Barrera is currently the director of Women’s Health and Preventive Services at the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County. She started her career with the Florida Department of Health in 2016 as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, specializing in women’s health.
Before coming to the Department of Health, she worked in private practice in collaboration with a physician in Pain management as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Prior to that, she worked in various hospital settings including medical-surgical and cardiovascular ICU. She has also served as quality improvement project manager at a for-profit surgery center in south Florida and infection control nurse. Dr. Barrera is a three-time Barry University graduate, completing her Bachelor of Nursing and then earning a Master of Science and Doctoral in Nursing Practice. She completed her doctoral studies in the effects provider recommendation have on the Human Papillomavirus vaccine.
Dr. Barrera has a passion for Women’s health and public health. She currently serves as member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and Florida Nurses Association. Additionally, she serves as a mentor for Nursing Doctoral students from Florida International University.
